Chain Drive | Definitions , Types, Advantages and Disadvantages


What is chain drive?

Before going to chain drive we first understand “What is mean by Chain?”

A chain can be defined as a series of links connected by pin joints.

The chain drive consists of an endless chain that wraps around two sprockets.


Advantages of Chain Drive:-

  •      Available for long and short range.
  •          Drive on multiple axes and a single chain
  •         Small in size, small in total.
  •          There is no risk of fire.
  •         The temperature and environmental conditions do not affect the operation.
  •         No initial tension is needed.
  •         The efficiency is very high (up to 96%).
  •          Do not slip
  •          Installation is easier
  •          It can withstand difficult conditions
  •         They can work in wet conditions.

Disadvantages of Chain Drive:-



Some disadvantages of chain transmissions compared to gear and belt transmissions are:-

  •  Requires precise alignment compared to belt drive
  •  Frequent lubrication is required
  •  Less load capacity compared to gears.
  •  Its operation is noisy and can cause vibrations.
  •  Not suitable for axes that are not parallel.
  •  Cannot be used where precise movement is required
  • They need housing
  • It should fit loosely, like a tension-er.


Applications of Chain Drives:-
  • They are used for energy transmission.
  • They are used in the transportation industry.
  • They are used for carpentry machines.
  • They are used for agricultural machinery.
  • They are used in drilling rigs of oil wells.
  • They are used for building construction.
  • They are used for material handling equipment.
  • They are used to lift load.
  • They are used to transport materials. 




Classification of Chain Drives:-

Chain Drive are classified into three types:- 

1.       Load lifting chains
2.       Power transmission chains
3.       Hauling chains

1.Load lifting chains:-

 It is used to suspend, increase or decrease the load in material handling operations.

2. Power Transmission Chains:-

The power transmission chains are used to transmitting the power from one shaft to another.

3. Hauling chains:-

It is used to keep the material moving by sliding, pulling or transporting it on the conveyor.
